Malaysian Designer to Debut $30 Million Diamond Dress
Malaysian designer Faisol Abdullah is creating the world's most expensive dress decorated with 751 diamonds from Middle Eastern jeweler Mouawad. The $30 million frock tops Chris Aire's $20 million diamond dress (above) created last year and ties the $30 million diamond bikini in terms of the world's most expensive item of clothing. Abdullah plans to debut the silk and taffeta evening gown, which features a central 70 carat pear-shaped diamond and is dubbed the "Nightingale of Kuala Lumpur," in time for next month's STYLO Fashion festival in the Malaysian capital. Mouawad, which produces Heidi Klum's jewelry line, is a red carpet favorite of Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears.
"Stocks drop, gold is even falling but a diamond is forever," Abdullah tells Reuters. "This is a dress with diamonds. Why go backwards, why can't we go forwards? We are going to the fantastic, but its real. You are getting value for money with these diamonds." "It's a security and insurance nightmare buts it's worth it," adds Antoine Bakhache, head of Mouawad's Asia operations. "It's not throwing $30 million right down the drain, it is an investment for the super-rich." Nancy Yeoh, chief executive of STYLO which commissioned the dress, says they plan to present the garment to royal courts around the world starting with the Middle East, noting, "It's art and there are still enough rich people who would want to buy."

Most Expensive Dress Shirt
They say the clothes make the man. That’s probably less true today than when you could tell a man’s occupation by the hat he wore, but if it’s true of anything then it’s true of the world’s most expensive shirt.
Swedish shirt-making company Eton, celebrating their 80th birthday, created this shirt out of the finest Egyptian cotton. Of course, it couldn’t be the most expensive shirt in the world without a few diamonds. Both the studs and the cufflinks are encrusted with diamonds—white diamonds on the cufflinks and colored diamonds on the studs.
As if that isn’t enough, the dress shirt will be touring the world before it’s sold at auction next year. The luxurious shirt will make stops in Milan, LA, Stockholm and a few other places with Eton stores.
The most expensive shirt is valued at £23,000 (over $45,000). Proceeds from its sale will go to charity.
Most Expensive Salons
Written by: jeremy Filed Under: Art, Fashion, Luxury, United States on May 31st, 2008We’ve already told you about the world’s most expensive haircut, a one-off service provided by stylist Stuart Phillips to retired millionaire Beverley Lateo, but Mr. Pillips’ usual fee of £150 (around $300) is far short of that commanded by some. The wealthy, after all, are willing to pay a handsome fee for a stylist who can turn the haircut in their mind’s eye into a reality. Let’s take a look, then, at the world’s most expensive salons.
Sally Hershberger
Sally Hershberger, known for her signature shaggy look, has salons in both downtown and uptown New York and a recently opened salon in Los Angeles. In the years she’s been styling, Hershberger has developed quite a list of celebrity clientele, including Sandra Bullock, Michelle Pfeiffer, Tom Cruise and even Hillary Clinton. She currently charges $600 for a haircut, but be sure to book your haircut well in advance. The waiting list is long and regulars get preference.
Frédéric Fekkai
Frédéric Fekkai, born in Southern France, has been cutting hair professionally for over twenty years. He now has eight salons, including locations in Soho, Greenwich and even Dallas. He’s been featured in a variety of magazines, from Menswear to Vogue, and his staff tests his line of hair care products in the same salons frequented by A-list celebrities like Live Tyler and Kim Basinger. A haircut at a Frédéric Fekkai Salon also costs $600.
Orlando Pita
(via bcause.org)
The priciest salon, though, is a private salon run by Orlando Pita. Unlike some other salons, Orlo Salon in New York City focuses solely on the haircut. Orlando has spent 25 years in the business and has styled for the likes of Madonna, Jennifer Connelly and Kirsten Dunst. Those who can manage to get an appointment at Orlo must be prepared to dish out $800 at the most expensive salon in the world.
Most Expensive Bathtubs
Written by: jeremy Filed Under: Art, Electronics, Luxury, World on June 6th, 2008 Nothing says luxury like lazing the hours away in a tub that costs more than a lot of houses. Those looking for such a tub, however, have a few more options than they used to. On the one hand, there’s the elegant, decorative tub that with its simple beauty. On the other hand, there’s the tub with features, gadgets and gizmos.
But which one is the most expensive tub in the world?
The Red Diamond bathtub (via bornrich.org)
The finest example of the latter is the Red Diamond bathtub from Water Games Technologies. Designed by Aldo Puglielli, the bright red tub is big enough for two people. That’s just the beginning of the tubs laundry list of features, however. It also includes a console framed in 18-karat gold—42 grams of 18-karat gold, to be exact—and Swarovski crystals. The console controls two waterproof HDTVs that remain hidden when not in use. Among the tub’s other features are a massage function, multicolored lighting, a hand-held shower unit, automatic disinfection and even a Swarovski-coated Champagne holder. At $47,200, however, the Red Diamond bathtub is not for the faint of wallet.
The Archeo Copper Bathtub
On the other end of the spectrum is Kallista’s Archeo Copper Bathtub. Made of solid copper, the tub is hand-crafted by the very people who refurbished Lady Liberty’s torch. Over five feet long and two-and-a-half feet wide, the tub is spacious enough to comfortably accommodate just about anyone. The fluted faucet and hand-held shower unit are designed with the same aesthetic quality as the rest of the tub, featuring a finely engraved starfish-on-seashell knob. The extravagantly made tub easily takes its place as the world’s most expensive bathtub with its $67,557 price tag—nearly $20,000 more than the Red Diamond!
Most Expensive Surfboards
Written by: jeremy Filed Under: Art on July 13th, 2008
Marc Newson’s nickel-plated board
(via 360Guide.info)
The original surfboards were a Hawaiian invention made from local wood. Not only were these boards over 15 feet long, but they were quite heavy as well. Nowadays, surfboards are usually made from polyurethane foam covered in a few layers of fiberglass cloth and then coated with polyester resin.
The world’s most expensive surfboard is a little different.
Created by Australian designed Marc Newson, the most expensive surfboard is one of ten such boards created as pieces of art. That doesn’t mean that they’re just there to look pretty, though. The 5 foot boards were plated in nickel and polished to a mirror finish to reduce drag. Newson originally sold them for $100,000 apiece.
One of these boards was used by championship surfer Garrett McNamara. Unfortunately, McNamara wiped out, lost the board and discovered it the next day in the hands of someone 15 miles down the beach. That board is now on display at the Gagosian Gallery in New York.
Dick brewer’s “Surfboards Hawaiian”
(via Extremehorizon)
Newson designed them with the help of Dick Brewer, a legend in the field who has previous experience in designing a most expensive surfboard. One of his “Surfboards Hawaii” elephant gun boards, created in the 60s, was sold for $30,000 at auction in 2007. Only two others are known to exist.
While there are nine other of Newson’s nickel-plated surfboards, one sold at a Sotheby’s auction in NYC still commanded a far greater price than anyone expected when it was sold for a record-breaking $220,000. Now that’s an expensive way to hang ten!
Most Expensive Bikini
Written by: jeremy Filed Under: Fashion, Luxury on July 8th, 2008 Molly Sims didn’t leave much to the imagination when she wore this diamond-studded swimwear for Sports Illustrated’s infamous Swimsuit Edition in 2006. Of course, what the bikini doesn’t actually cover is obscured by misdirection as the swimsuit, the most expensive bikini in the world, is as eye-catching as the woman modeling it.
Designed by Susan Rosen with Steinmetz Diamonds, the bikini is made up of 150 carats of flawless diamonds—including a pair of fifteen carat, round-cut diamonds; a thirty carat, emerald-cut diamond and a pear-shaped, fifty-one carat diamond. Rather than using cloth to make the expensive swimsuit, Ms. Rosen opted to make it out of platinum.
Including the top, bottom and necklace, the world’s most expensive bikini is valued at $30 million. Considering its value, it’s questionable whether or not it can actually be called “swimwear.” After all, who knows what a dip in the ocean could do to all those precious gems?
You may have heard recently that Victoria’s Secret has recently been displaying the world’s most expensive bra. It’s not true. In fact, there are several bras that we know of that were more expensive than that one, all products of Victoria’s Secret.
Black Diamond Fantasy Miracle Bra
$5 million
Modeled by Brazil’s Adriana Lima, the bra features 3,575 black diamonds, 117 certified one-carat white round diamonds and thirty-four rubies. The bra was designed to maximize the wearer’s cleavage, an effect furthered by the two 50-carat black diamonds dangling from the center. The bra was created by celebrity jeweler Martin Katz and cost just over $5 million to make.
Heavenly 70s Fantasy Bra
$10 million
The honor doesn’t even belong to this bra modeled by Tyra Banks in 2004. Featuring 2,900 diamonds set in 10kt white gold, this Victoria’s Secret offering had a centerpiece of its own—a flawless 70-carat pear-shaped diamond. The bra was designed by jeweler Mouawad.
Star of Victoria Fantasy Bra
$10 million
This bra, made with 1,150 ruby roses and 1,600 emerald leaves, was created by Mouawad in 2002. It took over 370 hours of work to make and featured the 60-carat Mouawad Mondera diamond.
Very Sexy Fantasy Bra
$11 million
Another 370-hour Mouawad creation, the Very Sexy Fantasy bra was designed in 2003. It trumped the Star of Victoria with its 70-carat Mouawad Excelsior diamond. A replica of this bra, along with one of the Star of Victoria, was created by Mouawad for the Gemological Institute of America in Carlsbad.
Heavenly Star Bra
$12.5 million
Studded with 1,200 Sri Lankan pink sapphires, this bra features a 90-carat emerald cut diamond as its centerpiece. That diamond alone, in fact, is worth $10.6 million. For an additional $750,000, one could even purchase a pair of matching briefs.
a pair of matching briefs.
Red Hot Fantasy Bra and Panties
$15 million
The world’s most expensive underwear was made with 1,300 precious stones, including 300 carats of Thai rubies, on red satin. The appearance of the set was kept secret until the grand opening of Manhattan’s new Victoria’s Secret store on Broadway and 67th Street. It was then modeled by Victoria’s Secret’s own Gisele Bundchen. Most Expensive College in the World
Written by: jeremy Filed Under: World on February 12th, 2009We’ve already told you that George Washington University in Washington, DC, is the most expensive college in the US. What we didn’t tell you, however, was that GW is also the most expensive university in the world. The university—known for its undergraduate liberal arts programs and its graduate programs in social sciences, international affairs, law, et cetera—was originally funded by a stipulation in George Washington’s will that fifty shares of the Potomac Company be used to support his long-held desire that the District of Columbia should be home to such an institution. While the shares didn’t turn out to be worth much, Washington’s wishes were eventually carried out by Baptist minister Luther Rice, who purchased land on Meridian Hill for the project.
Today, the university is located a mere four blocks from the White House. Tuition for the 2007-2008 school year, $39,240, is largely mitigated by the fact that GW provides the most need-based aid in the country; the average freshman received a package of around $23,466 this year. Even so, the school’s new president is working to make the world’s most expensive college more affordable to incoming students.
Surprisingly enough (or perhaps not), the top five most expensive colleges in the world are all US institutions: Kenyon College in Ohio ($38,140), Bucknell University in Pennsylvania ($38,134) and New York’s Vassar College ($38,115) and Sarah Lawrence College ($38,090).
The most expensive higher education outside of the US comes from Quest University Canada (formerly Sea to Sky University). This non-profit, private institution, opened September of 2007 in British Columbia, offers its eighty students only a single degree—a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences. They hope to have 640 students by 2010. Students take courses on the 190 acre campus in eighteen-day blocks rather than taking multiple courses at once. Tuition for the most expensive college outside of the US is $24,000 CAD ($23,420 USD).
Of course, while it certainly helps, attending one of the world’s most expensive colleges won’t guarantee that a student gets the best education in the world. The most important part of a student’s education is the drive to learn and to excel. Only when a student has these qualities can he or she be receptive to the benefits of higher education.
Most Expensive Cloth
Written by: jeremy Filed Under: Fashion, Luxury, World Holland and Sherry—a Scottish textile company that has outfitted George Clooney, Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise—has recently announced their production of the most expensive cloth in the world.
The fabric is the first in the world to be woven from 100% worsted vicuña. Vicuña, as you may recall, is the world’s most expensive wool and can only be shorn from the animal once every three years. The cloth can be purchased in three different colors—natural, midnight and black.
Scabal’s Gold Treasure
Unfortunately for Holland and Sherry, their offering, priced at £3,000 (US $4,319) per yard, falls somewhat short of being the world’s most expensive fabric.
Scabal—whose clients include Bill Clinton, Daniel Craig, Robert DeNiro and Jack Nicholson—announced their expensive fabric a mere eight months before Holland and Sherry announced theirs. Also made of vicuña, Scabal has gone one step further by weaving gold into the cloth. The result is the Gold Treasure range, priced at £4,000 (US $5,759) per meter—that works out to $1,755 per foot versus Holland and Sherry’s $1,439 per foot.
It can be purchased in charcoal, black or midnight blue.
Most Expensive Chair
Written by: jeremy Filed Under: Art, Fashion, Luxury, World A chair belonging to late and great French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent has just made history as the world’s most expensive chair.
The founder of the eponymous YSL luxury brand, Saint Laurent died in June of 2008 just a few days after marrying his partner and co-founder, Pierre Bergé.
The expensive armchair had belonged to a Paris-based art dealer before finding its way into the hands of Saint Laurent and Bergé. Reportedly, that very same art dealer is the person who paid ten times the chair’s estimated value to procure it at a Christie’s auction.
The chair was made by Irish designer Eileen Gray sometime between 1917 and 1919. Called the “Dragons” chair, it is one of Gray’s masterpieces and was expected to sell for €2-3 millions.
At Paris’ Grand Palais, held February 24th, the most expensive chair in the world was sold for €21.9 million—that’s US $27.8 million!
Most Expensive Jeans
Written by: tom Filed Under: Fashion, Luxury, World on March 27th, 2006 The popular worker’s denim trousers have become modern day fashion and status symbols. Designer jeans come in and out of popularity but in early 2000’s, expensive jeans started coming back into fashion with brands such as APO Jeans, Chip and Pepper, Paper Denim & Cloth, Seven for All Mankind, True Religion and many other brands costing $200 or more per pair.
The Guinness Book of Records lists a pair of Gucci genius jeans featuring elaborate feathers, beads, rips and buttons as most expensive jeans off-the-rack at a cost of $3,134.
But recently Forbes has showcased Escada’s Swarovski crystal-encrusted expensive jeans which sell for $10,000 US.
Levi Strauss Company bid $46,532 to buy a pair of their own brand jeans back on the popular auction site eBay. The most expensive jeans were an average pair manufacturered in the 1880s and Levi’s must have considered them a historical brand artifact.
Most Expensive Stock in the US
Written by: tom Filed Under: United States on October 8th, 2006 Stock price is determined fundamentally with the law of supply and demand. The most important factor that affects the value and appreciation of stock shares is a company’s earnings. What is the most expensive stock in the US?
The price for one Class A share of the most expensive stock in the US briefly topped $100,000 on Thursday October 5, 2006. Which stock is the highest-priced shared on the New York Stock Exchange?
Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway’s (BRKA) headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska, USA is a large holding company with a phenomenal annual return for its shareholders averaging over 25% during the last 25 years. The expensive stock price of Berkshire Hathaway has been attained in part because Berkshire Hathaway has never split it’s shares. Because of the high per-share price of the stock, the company is has not been made part of a stock market index such as the S&P 500.
Buffett himself reportedly owned 498,320 shares of the most expensive stock in the United States as of May 2006. Earlier this year Buffet made the commitment to give away his fortune to charity, announcing plans to contribute approximately 10 million of the less expensive Berkshire Hathaway’s Class B shares (worth over 30 billion USD) to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Most Expensive Dog Breed
Written by: jeremy Filed Under: Luxury, World on October 17th, 2007The most expensive dog was originally bred for fighting and guarding. Typically standing over 24 inches and weighing more than 100 lbs, it can be a terror if not socialized at an early age. The sport of dog fighting was popular in Bordeaux, France, and the Dogue de Bordeaux, or French Mastiff, proudly bears the city’s name.
(Image distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license.)
The most expensive dog breed may trace its ancestry to the Alans/Alaunts, a breed of dog from the Middle Ages, or the Bulldog. It was known in France as early as the 14th century and was entered into its first show in the 1863. It wasn’t until the 1920’s, though, that the French Mastiff became a uniform breed. The dog was virtually unknown outside of France until the late 1800s and was threatened with extinction after WWII. In 1970, though, the Dogue de Bordeaux population began to grow again.
Famous French Mastiffs include Beasley, who starred alongside Tom Hanks in Turner & Hooch, and Mac, recently stolen from and returned to Dutch football player Andy van der Meyde.
A puppy from this expensive breed averages around $2300.
Most Expensive Grill (For Your Teeth, Not Your Barbecue)
Written by: jeremy Filed Under: Luxury on March 13th, 2009 If you’re male and listen to hip hop, then you’ve probably considered getting a grill at one time or another. After all, what better way is there to show off your bling than to stick it to your teeth? Of course, if you want to put the most money where your mouth is, you’re going to have to get the most expensive grill in the world.
A Paul Wall grill
The most expensive grills are offered by rapper, jeweler and “People’s Champ” Paul Wall, whose designs start at $65 per tooth. The grills are custom made from mouth molds performed by your local dentist and your teeth can be covered in 14- or 18-karat yellow or white gold with diamonds in yellow, white, rose gold or pink.
Of course, the design is one of the most important factors in the price of the grill. The most expensive grill mentioned on Grills by Paul Wall’s site is the American Flag grill that sells for $10,000. It must have something to do with their 10% discount for military personnel.
Conscientious buyers take note—no blood diamonds will be used in your grill.
Most expensive plane
You know you want one.
Should private planes be considered luxury real estate? I think so. Possibly the most expensive real estate ever built, in fact. Any one who has ever flown on a commercial jet and been treated like cattle must have dreamed of owning a private jet. It is hard to imagine a more luxurious, comfortable, personal, splendiferous and dignified travel experience than flying by private plane, preferably a jet.

Most Expensive Men’s Suits
The business suit, the traditional outfit of men in the Western world, is generally worn with a dress shirt and tie. The modern suit first made its appearence in fashion during the late nineteenth century. Suits have always been a status symbol used in formal occasions and when conducting business. The fashions of suits have changed, but suit’s power to signal rank and membership maintains. So we must ask, what are the most expensive suits in the world?
Forbes recently released their Fall 2005 article of most expensive suits, which can be bought from a rack, as opposed to custom made expensive suits.
From the article:
Indeed, while the splurge appeal of custom and made-to-measure suits is still a draw for some shoppers, chances are they’d do just as well with a suit that could be fitted to their peers. “Our off-the-rack suits are the same make with the same natural shoulder as our custom suits,” says Jay Kos, a high-end New York suitmaker, whose beautifully made classic men’s suits have a wide appeal among the city’s heavier hitters. “Guys who are just coming into money want custom suits, so they can choose their own fabrics and details. But guys who already have a few custom suits are also buying off-the-rack if they see something great.”
- Brioni $6,000
- Kiton $5,800
- Canali $4,200
- Bottega Veneta $3,800
- Giorgio Armani $3,595
- Ralph Lauren $3,295
- Oxxford Clothes $3,000
- Jay Kos $2,800
- Issey Miyake $2,800
Some people may suggest business suits are too formal for the modern work-a-day Google world of casual dress. Nevertheless, it is unlikely that the use of suits will decline, because even a the most casual slacker needs an expensive suit for weddings, funerals, court appearances, and even some job interviews. The most expensive suits in the world are modern day replacements for polished European medieval armor.
Do you know of a more expensive off-the-rack suit?
